Suburban Developers and The Making of Urban Inequality

Historian Paige Glotzer will present the virtual 2021 Fall Lecture, "Suburban Developers and The Making of Urban Inequality." Glotzer is Assistant Professor and John W. and Jeanne M. Rowe Chair in the History of American Politics, Institutions, and Political Economy in the University of Wisconsin-Madison Department of History. Her award-winning book, "How the Suburbs Were Segregated: Developers and the Business of Exclusionary Housing, 1890-1960" was published in 2020.
The lecture will contextualize the cohort of developers of planned suburbs in the early twentieth century, their block-by-block development strategies, the ways they circulated ideas about segregation, and how those ideas became municipal and federal policy around the country.
The lecture is free and open to the public. It will be held via Zoom and you can register here. On the day of the lecture, those registered will be emailed the link to view the program, which will begin at 7:30 p.m.
